But we don't give up that easy! Whether you have an actual jeweler's bench set up at home or just clear a space on your dining room table, we are working to provide a live but physically distanced version of our most popular studio experiences, adapted for home study. Zoom remote tutoring begins October 16, 2020.
If you like the sound of almost "instant" jewelry models, than malleable soft wax sculpting is for you. These workshops begin with a basic introduction to soft wax in its many forms; students then go on to experiment and create their own variations on the techniques. Your wax model can then be cast into bronze, silver, gold, or even platinum.
Much of the jewelry that you see started out as a piece of wax. Our carving wax classes will introduce you to techniques for creating precision wax models for clean, professional castings . You can learn piercing, shaping, hollowing, and electric wax pen build-up.
Pierce, solder, hammer, polish... our foundation metal fabrication projects will introduce you to all the basic concepts of working in metal. Beginner projects focus on techniques rather than design, and will be practiced in brass, copper, and nickel silver. Advanced projects can be completed in sterling or karat gold.
Setting gemstones into metal is an art unto itself, and one that can take years to master. Our introductory stone setting projects will get you started with some of the most common tools and techniques. You may want to continue pursuing the skills that are most suitable to your design ideas in tutoring sessions.
It may be a pair of bands that tell a special story, a surprise engagement ring, or repurposing a stone from a family heirloom. Our couples work individually or together to create their wedding rings through our tutoring process. We love wax for this project because you can play with a few designs before you commit to the precious metal of your choice.
Most of the techniques outlined here can be taught at virtually any level, from beginner to expert. Complex designs can end up incorporating many different skills. But don't think you have to take them all on at once. We can step in and complete any aspect of your jewelry vision that you're not quite ready to learn.
At Precious Metal Arts, we have a 23 year history of helping individuals realize their artistic goals, whether they want to make a single piece or design an entire line of jewelry. Our Main Street Santa Monica studio has welcomed students and professionals of all skill levels seeking to learn every imaginable aspect of jewelry design and creation. In response to the current health crisis, we have paused in-person teaching and are working to adapt our special teaching style to physically distanced workshops and tutoring.
If you are a current tutoring student and have a tools and a workspace set up at home, you are good to go. We will be starting our remote learning experiment with live tutoring sessions, limited to four students, on October 16.
If you are just getting started, we will soon be adapting our "in studio" foundation workshops to allow you to join an online class by purchasing a tool and material kit for a specific technique or class. Sign up for our mailing list and we will let you know when we are ready to launch the beginner programs.
Wax is the easiest entry point to jewelry making, with soft wax being simple enough for kids to join in. Modeling your designs in wax means you get to practice your ideas in 3D before deciding which ones to commit to precioius metal.
Metalsmithing allows you to see your designs take form before your eyes as you manipulate the actual metal. And you get to play with fire! Most students eventually feel they need to learn both wax and metal techniques.
Soft Wax Modeling uses a malleable wax available in sheets, wires, and blocks and is particularly suited to learning at home.
In the studio, you can "jump in" to tutoring even if you haven't made jewelry before. But many of our students have found it helpful to start with one of our sample kits and a basic technique project. The live online version of these workshops will have everyone learning and following the same steps as a group.
Tutoring sessions offer students at all levels a chance to pursue their individual skills and designs, in a group setting. Each person works independently, with instructor guidance and supervision. Online tutoring will endeavor to provide the community experience of our studio tradition through Zoom.
In our Santa Monica studio, customized tutoring allows couples to actually create their own wedding rings! We are working on a distance version of the same concept, using simplified techniques and home-appropriate tools. From a simple wedding band to your dream design, we will consult with you about your ideas and walk you step by step through the process.
In the meantime, please check out our new Wedding Band Designer website to see how you can start designing your customized classic band now!
For now, we are not able to welcome students into our limited studio space and meet the current guidelines for stopping the spread of Covid 19. We look forward to a day in the near future when we can go back to the wonderful chaos of six full benches at Precious Metal Arts! In the mean time, we are anxious to communicate by email or phone, as you prefer. We are currently open limited hours to provide consultations, by appointment only, for custom orders, repairs, and options for distance learning.
